And speaking of Harry Potter (as I usually am), the first thing Snape ever says to Harry is, "Potter! What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?"
Ahem. Now it's time to...
Okay. First of all, Asphodel is a type of lily that symbolizes death.
And second, wormwood is a bitter plant that typically symbolizes remorse.
So Severus Snape was telling Harry Potter that he felt deep remorse for the death of Lily.
